Secretary Report: Lion K. Burnworth
The minutes from the September board meeting were emailed to the club. Lion K. Burnworth made a motion to accept. Lion R. Ferguson seconded the motion and the motion passed.
Treasurer’s Report: Lion B. Byers
The treasurer’s figures were emailed prior to the board meeting with the Activity Fund at $45,095.99 & Admin Fund at $5,230.85. Lion B. Byers did explain that the Zeffy payments for the 100th are dropping into the Activity account but will be moved to Admin when Zeffy payments are complete. It should be around $1,200 being moved. Lion L. Hawn made a motion to accept the report and Lion K. Boersma seconded the motion. The motion passed. Lion B. Byers said dues notices have been sent out twice and it’s time to engage sponsors to contact members for payment. He will send out a list of the members who still have not paid.
Service Chair Report: Lion Sh. Stormes
Lion K. Burnworth said our final roadside cleanup for this year will be on November 2nd at 9am. She’ll reach out for RSVPs closer to the date.
Lion Sh. Stormes shared a reminder that our District “Fall Into Service” project will be partnering with Marietta Main Streent to clean up the pollinator garden in Harmar Village on Fort Street on October 12th at 8am. Please invite others to join us. Wear long sleeves and pants and bring gloves, gardening tools (shovels, pruners, etc).
Lion Sh. Stormes said the District Project this year is My Very Own Blanket which are tie blankets that will already have a Lions label sewn on them for a child’s name, the blanket maker’s name, and a message. The goal for each club is a minimum of 20 blankets. Lion K. Burnworth said she could make 25 of them on her own. Lion S. Camacho said we should look to do 100 in honor of our 100th. Lion K. Burnworth made a motion to order/make 100 blankets. Lion S. Camacho seconded the motion. The motion passed. Lion Sh. Stormes will give details to B. Byers because it’s less expensive if you pay by check and arrange to pick them up.
Lion Sh. Stormes said there is a group that goes into Legacy Nursing Home in Devola and provides free haircuts, paints resident’s fingernails, and fills the birdfeeders on the room windows. They are in need of 6 50lb bags of birdseed and she made a motion to donate $150 toward this. Lion S. Camacho seconded the motion and the motion passed. They are also looking for volunteers for this on October 9th, so if you’re available, please let Shelly know and she’ll provide you with details.
2nd VP Report: Lion B. Hadfield
Bridge of Heroes Update: Lion B. Hadfield said the flags will go up early so we can include the Washington County Veteran’s Hall of Fame on November 1st. Flags will go up on the 31st and will come down some time after Veteran’s Day on the 11th. Lion B. Byers said to mark stripped out brackets when we find them so he can drill and re-tap them as needed. Lion S. Marshall asked about extra wear and tear on the flags/poles due to the extended time frames and the general consensus is, yes, they do incur extra damage when we have them out for longer. We have 178 of the 235 flags sponsored.
Rose Sale Update: Lion J. Greene said we sold 675 dozen roses—Congrats! Pick up will be at the Lafayette and look for an email from Tonya to confirm pick up details.
1st VP Report: Lion P. Byers
Sight saving 6 Applications, 3 approved , 0 denied, 2 referred & 2 pending. Lion P. Byers said there was a request for vision therapy for 2 Washington County students receiving therapy in Athens and Ollie Tipple was able to help get that covered through grants and completely cover the cost.
District Eyeglass Trailer Donation Request – Lion J. Greene said this had been tabled at the last meeting. Lion S. Camacho said the trailer has already been purchased as a district expense but there are currently not funds to cover it. It was already used to transport over 25,000 sunglasses alone, not including eye glasses. We collect a significant quantity of eye glasses each year and, if the smaller clubs can donate $100, we should be able to as well. Lion S. Camacho made a motion to donate $100 toward the trailer cost. Lion L. Hawn seconded the motion and the motion passed.
President’s Report: Lion J. Greene said that she has put together a google survey for the Community Needs Assessment and has assembled and email list of 50+ community leaders who will be receiving the survey. Hopefully we get some responses and will see how we can help meet some needs in the community. The Club Satisfaction Survey is a bit more detailed and she may roll that into the committee that Lion B. Burnworth has agreed to lead.
LCIF Coordinator: Lion O. Cartmell was not present, but Lion J. Greene said she did reach out to our LCIF Coordinator, Greg Randolph, to see if the District was doing anything specific to help with the damage in NC, GA, etc. He said no, but encourages direct donations to LCIF.
Community & Youth: Lion B. Burnworth
We received a request from Rockstar Wellness to support their Pound for a Cure event and Lion J. Green said Lion B. Burnworth had recommended the $100 level sponsorship. She explained what that entailed and said she thought it was a worthy cause, but that it was for a private business and she’d like to see some sort of partnership there if we’re going to continue to support them like doing a member drive or something where they reciprocate the relationship. Lion S. Camacho said she’s approached them about that before and has been turned down and their secondary business backed out a month before the STEPS race as a timer, so it’s clear they aren’t supporting us as a club. No one made a motion to donate.
Lion R. Ferguson said he was approached by Doug Mallet to make a donation to the Washington County Foster Parents Foundation and he made a motion to donate $250, saying Doug has purchased roses from him for years. Lion S. Camacho seconded the motion and the motion passed.
Membership (54) Lion J. Greene said that Lion’s Rachel and Tommy Brunoni sent in their resignation from the club due to their move to Pennsylvania. Lion K. Burnworth has already emailed them their member numbers so they can join a club in their area if/when they’re ready to do so. Lion S. Camacho made a motion to drop them in good standing. Lion K. Burnworth seconded the motion and the motion passed.
Publicity: Lion S. Camacho reminded the club that if you have an event, activity, etc. that you’d like to have promoted, get her the information and she’ll take care of it. Lion G. Ingram said we can be doing more for club promotion like logoed safety vests for trash pick up and on the bridge, magnets for the side of the vehicles when we do the flags, stickers to go on every box of roses, etc. We could clean the bike path so there is higher visibility of us doing things in the community. He said there should be a way to funnel everyone’s ideas and act on them. Lion J. Greene said she’ll review where Lion B. Burnworth is with his committee for those types of ideas when Lion B. Burnworth is back in town.
Scholarship: Lion B. Ferguson does not have updated numbers at this time but, again, said that we may be looking to increase the scholarships from $1,500 to $2,000.
Old Business:
Save the Date – 100th Anniversary Celebration – Lion J. Greene said we have about 87 RSVPs for our dinner and everything is lining up. We’ll have appetizers and memorabilia on the upper level and dinner on the main level. It is a cash bar and *please remember that there are to be no alcoholic drinks in the lobby*. So, if you need to take the elevator upstairs and want your drink upstairs, you’ll have to have someone walk it up for you. There will be live music by Lion P. Walter. She will need help that day loading the keyboard into her vehicle, unloading it at the event, and helping her load it and unload it after the event. If interested, please let Lion J. Greene know. The venue will be setting up for us and the bartender will be cleaning up afterwards, so we won’t need any help the day of. Lion L. Hawn said he has several things to bring and will need tables to put them on—there will be tables upstairs for memorabilia. We also have a Ribbon-Cutting event next Friday, the 11th, during our lunch meeting to celebrate our 100th anniversary. We will be hosting members of the Marietta Chamber of Commerce. There will be a buffet style lunch that day and she’d like to see as many Lions coming out that day as possible. Don’t forget to RSVP when the lunch invite goes out so we have an accurate count for the Lafayette.
Steps 5K Recap: Lion S. Camacho said it was the biggest in-person race to date and the numbers even beat the Covid registrations. The event raised over $2,000 and Marietta Noon Lions was featured on the back of the tshirt twice for our 2 sponsorships.
District Cheese Sale: Lion K. Burnworth reminded everyone that we are participating in the District Cheese Sale and orders are due to her by Friday the 11th so she can compile the amounts and get the info to Lion B. Byers for a check and notify Mary Bumpis. She also made a motion for $275 max toward the teacher meat and cheese trays we’ve done for the last few years for the Marietta City Schools. $212 of that would be meat and cheese and the rest would go toward trays, crackers, ribbon, etc. Lion Sh. Stormes seconded the motion and the motion passed.
Marietta Main Street Christmas – Lion K. Burnworth reminded the group that we did elect to sponsor a lamppost, tree, and parade. We don’t have to do anything for the lamp post and Lion K. Burnworth will cover the tree decorating, but we will need people to help decorate for the parade and walk in it. Lion St. Stormes has offered up his garage for decorating and Lion B. Burnworth said we could use his trailer and he’d drive it in the parade. If interested in participating, please let Lion J. Greene know.
Halloween Parade – Lion J. Greene said we’ve asked a few times for a chair for the annual Halloween Parade/Costume Contest and no one has volunteered. She recapped the history of the event and it’s move to the Fairgrounds and also mentioned how it no longer seems to meet a need in the community since there are so many trunk or treat events. Participation has been way down and there isn’t a parade anymore since the move to the fairgrounds. There was some discussion and it was agreed that this is no longer a project we’ll do, but that we will let Connie Grimes with the Civitan group know that we did send the $500 for her event but won’t be heading up the Costume Contest/Halloweeen parade any longer. They are welcome to use our category signs if they’d like to do the costume contest.
Peace Poster Contest – Lion K .Burnworth said that she’d received an email from Lion B. Johnson that the Peace Poster information had been sent to Marietta, Frontier Local, Caldwell Exempted Village and Noble Local School Districts. She asked for them to be returned or she can pick them up by November 1st.
Citizenship Essay Contest – no update from Lion B. Burnworth
Club Shirt Order: Lion S. Camacho is working on an order but realized everyone might want something different. There are minimums on screen printed items but not on embroidery. She’ll send out an email to see what we’re looking for and then compile an order form. There will also be an option for a 100th Anniversary Tshirt.
New Business:
Halloween in the Park Donation Request – Lion B. Byers said we’d received this request in the mail and, since it was already a budgeted item for $500, the check was already sent.
Annual Giving: Lion K. Burnworth said it’s that time of year to send our annual budgeted donations to the Ohio Lions Foundation, Ohio Lions Eye Research Foundation, Ohio Lions Pilot Dogs, Sight & Hearing Foundation, LCIF, Betty Coffey Fellowship, and the Diabetes Association. We already sent our annual giving for OLPCF and COLEB. Lion K. Boersma made a motion to proceed with these donations at $500 each. Lion Sh. Stormes seconded the motion. Lion S. Camacho confirmed which ones we were donating too since the agenda had shortened names that didn’t match what we typically donate to. We confirmed and the motion passed.
Lion K. Boersma said she’d gone to the building and was unable to open the key box to get into the building. The key box was stuck and she couldn’t reach it. This lead to discussion about needing better security for the building since we have all of the flags and poles in it and can only insure so much. Lion L. Hawn and Lion T. Henderson will look at better locking options for the door and bring that back to the club.
We did Good of the order and the meeting was adjourned.
Respectfully submitted, Secretary Lion K. Burnworth
